What IS mental health?

Usually when we hear about mental health, it's not featured in a favorable light.  You may read in the newspaper that a crime was committed by someone labeled "mentally ill."  Or, perhaps you've heard on a TV court drama that someone needs a "mental health evaluation."  These representations of mental health don't make it easier to understand it...or how it applies to us.

What are your New Year's resolutions?

It's not uncommon to start off the new year with high hopes for change.  There is chatter from the people around us about losing weight, working towards a promotion or staying in better contact with friends. The start of the new year is a convienient time to take stock of ourself and current situation.

The idea of self-care is not a new one.   However, taking the time to attend to our needs is often pushed aside due to the demands of our jobs & families.

ACT does things differently. ACT is a grassroots agency that has been around since 1956. We've learned to listen to what the community and our clients need. ACT Spanish-speaking Therapist Asminda Sousa heard time and time again

ACT for Mental Health strives to empower persons who are handicapped socially, mentally and economically.

In a Community Center atmosphere, we offer support and encouragement through educational services, personal enrichment activities, therapeutic counseling and the teaching of basic life and work skills.

Put simply – ACT promotes mental wellness among the disadvantaged, the working poor, and those without resources.
