Matt came to the ACT Community Center as a disabled fireman who had been
out of work for about a year and ended up in the ranks of the homeless.
When he came to the ACT he was bitter and resentful and maintained that
he would not work without pay. In a short period of time, however, after
experiencing the self-help model provided by ACT, he was volunteering to
help with the maintenance and other volunteer-staff duties. He used
ACT's mail service and telephone, began taking odd jobs, and using that
money for transportation to look for permanent work. After using the ACT
Community Center for three months, he obtained fulltime work and is now
no longer homeless but is an employed resident of Santa Clara County.
